One Day's Journey

Airdrie has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. It was first established as a railway siding in 1889 during the construction of the Calgary and Edmonton Railway. The town was named after Airdrie, Scotland, reflecting the Scottish heritage of many of the railway workers. In its early years, Airdrie was a small rural community, primarily serving as a stopover point for railway travelers. However, the town began to grow steadily, and by 1909, it was incorporated as a village. The growth of Airdrie accelerated in the mid-20th century, with the town becoming a popular residential area for people working in Calgary and the surrounding region. Recognizing this growth, Airdrie was officially designated as a town on May 1, 1974. A decade later, on January 1, 1985, Airdrie achieved city status. This was a significant milestone, reflecting the rapid development and expansion of the city. By the end of 2023, Airdrie’s population had grown to approximately 86,000, making it the fifth-largest city in Alberta.

Today, Airdrie is a vibrant city known for its friendly community, quality of life, and proximity to Calgary. It continues to grow and develop, with its strategic location within the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor contributing to its regional significance. Despite its growth, Airdrie has retained its small-town charm, making it a desirable place to live and work.
