Nestled in the heart of Central Alberta, within Smoky Lake County, lies the quaint hamlet of Bellis. It is a very small community with a land area of just 0.23 km. The name Bellis, derived from the Ukrainian phrase ‘Bel lis’, translates to ‘white woods’, a nod to the local birch and poplar trees that grace the landscape.

The history of Bellis dates back to 1898, when the first settlers arrived. Originally an incorporated municipality, Bellis dissolved its village status on January 1, 1946, to become part of the Municipal District of Vilna No. 575. This marked a significant shift in the administrative landscape of the hamlet. Fast forward to modern times, Bellis is home to a population of 60, according to the 2021 Census. Modern-day Bellis continues to be a close-knit community, with records documenting the lives of families, events, and local happenings. Today, Bellis offers a blend of history and modernity. Visitors to the hamlet can step back in time by visiting Alberta’s oldest operating pool hall. The pool hall, with its vintage charm, offers an experience akin to stepping onto a movie set. One of the most iconic historical landmarks of Bellis is the Bellis Home Grain Co. Ltd. elevator. Constructed in 1920, this grain elevator was operational until 1972. In 1980, it was relocated and is now preserved at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, east of Edmonton.
