Buffalo Lake, located in central Alberta, is a large lake that lies in the Red Deer River basin. It’s situated at the limit between Camrose County, the County of Stettler No. 6, and Lacombe County, approximately 40 km east of Red Deer. The lake has a water surface of 93.5 km and a drainage area of 1,440 km.

Historically, Buffalo Lake was known as a watering hole for bison, who would wallow in its shallow waters as a respite from heat and insects. Early settlers found many buffalo skulls in the area, which led to the lake’s name. The lake is unique in Alberta as it is actively “managed” via controlled inflow pumped in from the Red Deer River via Parlby Creek and outflow back into the Red Deer River via Tail Creek.

The Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement, one of eight Metis Settlements in Alberta, is located near the lake. Established in 1941 as lands designated for Metis veterans of World War II, the settlement has grown significantly since its first settlers arrived in 1951. Today, it boasts a population of 1,236 people and a land base of 35,356 hectares.

Modern times have seen Buffalo Lake evolve into a recreational hotspot. It hosts a number of recreational areas, including Boss Hill, Rochon Sands, White Sands, Scenic Sands, Buffalo Sands, Pelican Point, Pelican View Estates, The Narrows, and Rochon Sands Provincial Park. The lake is a favourite for boaters, swimmers, and kitesurfers. Fishing is also popular, with the lake supporting a decent amount of Northern Pike and Burbot.

The Buffalo Lake Metis Settlement hosts the annual Gateway to the North Pro Rodeo, the only Indigenous pro rodeo in Canada. This event, which began in 2023, attracts thousands of spectators and competitors, offering a variety of rodeo events and local musical entertainment. The rodeo is not only a thrilling show but also a major social event that brings the community together.
