High River is located approximately 70 kilometers south of Calgary. It sits at the junction of Alberta Highways 2 and 23. The area was originally inhabited by the Blackfoot people, who used the region for hunting and gathering. Traces of Blackfoot hunting villages have been found throughout the area, highlighting its long-standing significance. The town’s modern history began in the late 19th century when ranching became a prominent industry. The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1892 marked a significant turning point, transforming High River into an important shipping point for cattle. This development spurred growth and attracted settlers, leading to the incorporation of High River as a village on December 5, 1901, and later as a town on February 12, 1906. The early 20th century saw continued growth and development in High River. The town’s economy was bolstered by agriculture, particularly wheat growing and ranching. The construction of brick buildings and the establishment of various industries further contributed to its expansion. One notable development was the construction of one of Canada’s first air force stations east of the town in 1921.

Today, High River is a vibrant community that celebrates its western and agricultural heritage. The town is known for its picturesque landscapes, historic buildings, and cultural events. High River’s Brand Story, which features cattle brands from the area’s early settlers, is a testament to the town’s rich history. The town has preserved many of its historic properties, ensuring that future generations can appreciate its unique heritage. Sheppard Family Park, for example, houses some of the oldest buildings from the early 20th century. High River’s history is also captured in 16 beautiful murals painted on building walls throughout the community, offering a visual journey through time. The town hosts numerous events and exhibits throughout the year that celebrate its western and agricultural roots. The town’s parks, library, museum, and visitor information center are central to community life. These facilities offer a range of activities and resources for residents and tourists alike. High River’s commitment to preserving its heritage while promoting community engagement makes it a unique and welcoming place to live and visit.
