Farrell Lake, originally known as Long Lake, was first settled by pioneers in the early 20th century. The area around the lake was ideal for agriculture, and settlers quickly established homesteads, drawn by the fertile land and abundant water supply. The lake itself became a focal point for the community, providing a source of water for irrigation and a place for recreation and relaxation. As the community around Farrell Lake grew, so did the infrastructure. The Springwater School, built by a local stonemason using all local stones, became a central hub for education and community events. The school, which originally had only ten students, hosted many gatherings and activities, even after it closed as a school in 1952. The building was later sold to the Majestic Farrell Lake Women’s Institute, continuing its role as a community center.

Today, Farrell Lake remains a vital part of the local landscape, attracting visitors and residents alike with its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The lake spans approximately 3565 acres (14.4 square kilometers) and is part of a complex of shallow alkali lakes known as the Chain Lakes. These lakes are home to a diverse array of wildlife, including migratory birds such as the Piping Plover and the American Avocet. In recent years, conservation efforts have focused on preserving the natural habitat around Farrell Lake and protecting the species that call it home. The lake and its surrounding wetlands are part of the Chain Lakes Important Bird Area (IBA), recognized for its significance in supporting nesting Piping Plovers and other shorebirds. Efforts to manage water levels and protect the shoreline from erosion and human disturbance are ongoing, ensuring that the lake remains a healthy and vibrant ecosystem.

The community around Farrell Lake continues to honor its rich heritage while embracing the opportunities of modern life. The Farrell Lake Church, located in the Delia area, serves as a reminder of the area’s religious and cultural history. The church, along with other historical sites, attracts visitors interested in exploring the region’s past and learning about the lives of its early settlers.
