Born in Schooner Bay, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Agnes came from two family lines from Scotland: McPhail and Cameron. Her father, Archie McPhail, was a mining engineer and worked for Caledonia Mines for underground coal mining. They migrated to Alberta by 1901, then known as North-West Territories, to settle in the new village of Frank, under the shadow of Turtle Mountain. On April 29, 1902, the side of the mountain slid down and buried most of the town, but spared Agnes and family. With no more work, Archie packed up again and took the family by train to Calgary to start over.
Agnes met George Benedict in Calgary, likely at a social dance, and they married on December 26, 1904 at her parent’s home on 716 4th Street East.
