Cleverville, Alberta, was established in the early 20th century, named in honor of Martin Clever, one of the first settlers in the area. Cleverville began as a small settlement with a country store and a mail route, serving the needs of the local farming community. The town quickly grew, boasting several businesses, including general stores, a drug store, a butcher shop, and a blacksmith shop. However, the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in 1910 marked a significant turning point for Cleverville. The railway did not pass directly through the town, prompting the residents to relocate closer to the new railway line.

The relocation of Cleverville led to the establishment of a new settlement, which was named Champion. The name is believed to have been chosen in honor of H.T. Champion, a banker from the Winnipeg firm Alloway and Champion. Champion quickly became a thriving community, benefiting from its proximity to the railway. The town’s economy was primarily driven by agriculture, with the fertile prairie grasslands providing ideal conditions for farming and ranching1.

Today, Champion remains a small but vibrant village in southern Alberta. With a population of around 350 residents, the village continues to serve as a local center for the surrounding rural community. Agriculture remains a significant part of the local economy, with many residents engaged in farming and ranching. The village also benefits from its location on Highway 23, which provides easy access to larger towns and cities in the region. Champion has managed to retain much of its historical charm, with several buildings and landmarks from its early days still standing. The Champion Inn, originally built in 1911 as the Savoy, is one such landmark. Over the years, the inn has housed various businesses, including a dentist’s office, a hair salon, and an ice cream parlor. Today, it continues to serve as a focal point for the community, hosting events and gatherings.
