Nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies, the communities of Bragg Creek, Priddis, Kew, and Millarville have long been integral to Alberta’s rich history. These areas, known for their stunning landscapes, pioneering spirit, and deep-rooted traditions, have evolved from early settlements into thriving rural communities.

Bragg Creek, named after Albert Warren Bragg, who homesteaded in the area in 1894, has a history deeply tied to ranching and outdoor recreation. The hamlet became a popular stop for travelers heading west, and over time, it developed into a hub for artists, ranchers, and outdoor enthusiasts. The area is known for its scenic beauty, with the Elbow River running through it, and has been featured in several films and TV series. Today, Bragg Creek is a gateway to Kananaskis Country, offering hiking, biking, and equestrian trails.

Priddis was named after Charles Priddis, an early settler who homesteaded along Fish Creek in 1886. He played a significant role in the development of the community, donating land for the Priddis School and other local institutions. The hamlet became a gathering place for ranchers and farmers, with polo matches, hunting, and fishing events shaping its early social life. Today, Priddis maintains its rural charm while being a short drive from Calgary, making it a desirable location for those seeking a quieter lifestyle.

Kew, though less widely recognized, shares a historical connection with its neighboring communities. It was part of the broader settlement efforts in the foothills region, with early pioneers establishing farms and ranches. The Millarville, Kew, Priddis, and Bragg Creek Historical Society has documented the area’s past, preserving stories of early settlers and their contributions to the region. Kew remains a quiet, rural area, embodying the spirit of Alberta’s early homesteaders.

Millarville, established in the late 19th century, quickly became known for its agricultural significance. The Millarville Racing and Agricultural Society, founded in 1907, has played a central role in the community, hosting events such as the Millarville Fair and the famous Millarville Farmers’ Market. The Leighton Art Centre, located nearby, showcases Alberta’s artistic heritage. Millarville continues to be a vibrant rural community, balancing tradition with modern development.
