From the plaque posted at this cemetery:
Under the cottonwoods lies the body of Henry Stafford, son of William Stafford, the first mines superintendent of the North West Coal and Navigation Company (Limited).
Henry Stafford was only 17 years old when he died of typhoid in 1883. His death created an immediate practical problem for the community of Coalbanks, since there was no formal burial ground nor a resident minister.
William Stafford chose this location at which to bury his son, and later, the body of a young workman, Britton Stephens, who died of typhoid a month later. The burial ground has been marked and maintained in the memory of those early pioneers.
