Pleasant Valley Pioneer Cemetery (sometimes called Pleasant Valley Cemetery) in Red Deer County is often referred to as Knee Hill Valley Pioneer Cemetery. Historically the area was known as Pleasant Valley and is located in Knee Hill Valley, within the Red Deer Census Division, Alberta.
Settlers came during the 1890s and many of the surnames represented in early census records remain in use among local families. Some descendants still farm the original homesteads. The first homesteaders or pioneer families contributed to establishing local institutions like churches, schoolhouses, and cemeteries as their communities grew.
This area is rural, and as was typical of pioneer communities, cemeteries of this kind served not just as a burial function but also were part of the fabric of social identity, religion, and memorial for early hardships. The cemetery captures a time of life and death in early settler life with infant mortality, travel risks, harsh winters which were common to pioneers in Alberta.
