Born and raised in Wallaceburg, Ontario, George Benedict headed west to Calgary in about 1899. Barbering was his trade and he worked for E. J. Brennan. George enjoyed dancing and did part-time dance instructions at Professor Hepburn's Academy of Dance. Married Agnes McPhail in 1904, she a survivor of the Frank Slide in Crowsnest Pass. They raised eight children.
