Arrowwood, a village in Vulcan County, is located approximately 60 kilometers east of Okotoks. Named after the nearby East Arrowwood Creek, it is home to 188 residents. he village council, consisting of a mayor and two councillors, governs the village. Nearby Shouldice is a hamlet also within Vulcan County. Located about 85 kilometers southeast of Calgary, it is a quiet community with a population of just seven. Despite its size, Shouldice is known for its historic Shouldice Hernia Hospital, a global leader in non-mesh hernia repair. Mossleigh, yet another hamlet in Vulcan County, is located on Highway 24, approximately 63 kilometers southeast of Calgary. Known for the Aspen Crossing train attractions, Mossleigh is a perfect day trip destination from Calgary. Aspen Crossing offers unique train excursions, a rail dining car with dinner theatre, a gift store, a garden center, and a campground with caboose cabins. Mossleigh is also home to three wooden grain elevators. Lastly, Farrow is an unincorporated community in Vulcan County. Once a thriving community, it has been completely abandoned and is now owned by a local farmer. Despite its current state, Farrow’s history is still evident. It was originally known as Glenview or Randle, but the name was changed to “Farrow”, the maiden name of the wife of the Superintendent of the Canadian Pacific Railway at that time.

These four communities, each with their unique histories and attractions, are testament to Alberta’s rich heritage. Whether it’s the vibrant community life in Arrowwood, the medical history in Shouldice, the train attractions in Mossleigh, or the intriguing history of Farrow, there’s something for everyone in these hidden gems of Alberta.
