Bow City is a Hamlet on Secondary Highway 539, approximately 90 kilometres northeast of Lethbridge. Bow City’s ambitious name, which replaced the original name of Eyremore in 1958, belies its modest hamlet status. W.T.P. Eyres opened the first post office in 1909 and suggested a name that reflected his own, as well as his wife’s maiden name of Moore. The present name evokes the adjacent Bow River.

In his book “The Story Behind Alberta Names”, author Harry M. Sanders inserts the cover of a pamphlet published by the Prairie Coal Company of Regina. The grandiose pamphlet reads “Bow City – The Pittsburg of Canada. Having coal, natural gas, iron ore, brick clay, water power, rich farm lands, fine scenery, purest air, purest water, abounding sunshine, boating, fishing, bathing. Making a foundation for certain and rapid development. What will it’s future be?” Like so many prairie settlements, the ambitiously named Bow City aspired to greatness, yet remains a hamlet.
