The Gaetz Cemetery is likely named after the Gaetz family, one of the founding families of Red Deer. The family’s most notable member, John Jost (Jack) Gaetz, was an early homesteader and a leader in community affairs. He served as Red Deer’s MLA from 1918 to 1921 and later as a member of the University of Alberta Senate. In 1893, Jack Gaetz donated a portion of his homestead for the Methodist Cemetery, which later became the Red Deer Cemetery. This act of generosity is a testament to the Gaetz family’s commitment to the community. The Gaetz family’s legacy also includes the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary, a land preserved due to Jack Gaetz’s commitment to the natural environment.

As of 2024, AFHS volunteers have documented 39 interred persons at this cemetery.
