Gem Cemetery was founded in the early 1900s, during a time when the area was rapidly developing due to the influx of settlers seeking new opportunities in the fertile lands of Alberta. The cemetery was initially established on a two-acre plot, providing a final resting place for the pioneers who helped shape the community. Among the first known burials were Walter Smith and an unnamed infant born to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Smith in 1920. One of the notable features of Gem Cemetery is the Gem Mennonite Cemetery, which holds significant historical value for the Mennonite community in the region. The cemetery is home to a collection of gravestones and memorials that reflect the cultural and religious heritage of the Mennonite settlers who played a vital role in the area’s development. The cemetery has been meticulously maintained by the Alberta Genealogical Society, ensuring that the stories of those buried there are preserved for future generation

Over the years, Gem Cemetery has faced challenges such as natural wear and tear, vandalism, and the passage of time. However, dedicated volunteers and local organizations have worked tirelessly to preserve the cemetery’s historical significance. Efforts to document and catalog the gravesites have been crucial in maintaining the cemetery’s integrity and providing valuable resources for genealogical research. Today, Gem Cemetery continues to serve as a place of reflection and remembrance for the community. Visitors can explore the well-preserved gravestones, each telling a unique story of the lives that once shaped the region. The cemetery also serves as a gathering place for historical events and genealogical research, attracting visitors from near and far who are interested in uncovering their family histories.
