Approximately 6 km south-west of Sylvan Lake in Red Deer County, Kuusamo is located about 25 km west of Red Deer on Highway 11. This area was originally settled by Finns and Kuusamo is a Finnish word meaning “green trees” or “spruce trees”. At an elevation of 986 metres. Kuusamo is situated nearby to the locality of Elspeth, as well as near the village of Norglenwold. The first school in the area was called the Kuusamo School (S.D. #755, est. 1902) and was near the present site of the United Grain Growers elevator, in 35-38-W5M. The first known burial in Kuusamo Cemetery was in 1903 for a child of early settlers Olga Marja (Karhinen) Wuobio & Isaac Wuobio who are also interred here..
