Lured by the promise of free land in Alberta to those willing to establish a farm, Ora Ebenezer Veach and Edna ‘Pearl’ (Bedwell) Veach and their family came from Iowa, USA. Ora was born in roughly 1879 at Appanoose County, Iowa, the son of Almina Gertrude (Reynolds) Veach & William Poston Veach. Pearl was born in 1882 at Wapello County, Iowa, the daughter of Caroline (Veach) Bedwell and J R Bedwell. Ora & Pearl married at Corydon, Wayne, Iowa USA on 13 Oct 1900. According to Homestead Record # 1372217 a 14-foot x 18-foot log cabin and a barn were built on the NW quarter of Sec 32 Twp 38 Rge 20 W4M and the cabin was occupied on 02 Dec 1902. Four of Ora & Pearl’s children are known to be buried in the small Veach Family Cemetery, along with Ora’s younger brother Roy R Veach. By the 1926 Alberta census almost all the family seems to have gone back to the USA. The land is now part of a Hutterian Brethren farm, and a metal barrier has been placed around the graves to safeguard them.
