Alston cemetery is located 25 km southwest of the Town of Vulcan. When the original cemetery plot was purchased, in order to get the title to the piece of land, someone had to be listed as owners, so it was registered in the names: Eliza Mallory, Emma Jane Hennon – wife of Norman Hennon, Annie Elizabeth Patton – wife of John Patton, and Elizabeth Annie Zang – wife of Julius Zang. On the back of the title are written the words: All of Lawrence, Alberta, as joint tenants.
The nearby town of Vulcan, known as the “Official Star Trek Capital of Canada”, is located 130 km southeast of Calgary. Vulcan has a tourism building made to look like a landed space station, a statue of the original star ship Enterprise, and other Star Trek themed attractions.
In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, the Town of Vulcan had a population of 1,769. The town’s economy is mainly tourism and agriculture-based. Wheat, canola and barley are the main crops grown in the Vulcan area. Oil and gas is another industry that employs many residents of Vulcan.
