The village of Duchess is located on Secondary Highway 550, approximately 120 kilometres Northwest of Medicine Hat. When the Canadian Pacific Railway built it’s “Royal Line” between Empress and Bassano in 1912, the appointment of Canada’s tenth governor general since Confederation was still a recent memory. Queen Victoria’s son Prince Arthur, First Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850 – 1942), held the vice regal post from 1911 to 1916. His wife, the Duchess, was a Prussian Princess and a member of the German royal family, the Hohenzollnerns: Luise Margarete Alexandra Viktoria (1860 – 1917). Among the avenues originally named in Duchess were Louise and Margaret. Duchess became a village in 1921.
Other places along this line, chosen for their connection to royalty or aristocracy, include Empress, Iddlesleigh, Milicent, Patricia, Princess, and Rosemary.
