Like many rural church cemeteries in Alberta, Sion Lutheran Cemetery echoes with the stories of pioneering families. Gravestones record births and deaths spanning much of the 20th century and mark the final resting place of early settlers, their children, spouses, and fellow worshippers. Although the church itself is no longer active, the cemetery remains as one of the few physical reminders of the community that once gathered there, holding memorial services and celebrating milestones.
The rural district around Sion was part of a wave of settlement in the first decades of the 20th century, during a period when European immigrants, particularly of German and Scandinavian backgrounds, were established on trails heading northwest, helping anchor the surrounding agricultural districts.
